James Ransom Heirtzler was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on September 16, 1925. He received his M.S. from Louisiana State University in 1948, and his Ph.D. in physics from New York University in 1953. The same year he was appointed Assistant Professor at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, where he stayed until 1956, when he became a senior physicist at General Dynamics Corporation. In 1960 he went to Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory at Columbia University. He also served as the director of Columbia's Hudson Laboratories before accepting a position as the Chair of the Department of Geology and Geophysics at WHOI in 1969.
The Papers of James Heirtzler consist of correspondence, reports, notes, notebooks, and data relating to subjects such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Reykjane's Ridge, the search for the Thresher, and Hudson Laboratories.
The custodial history of the records is undocumented.
