Joan the Drone was an experimental vessel.  It was originally a lifeboat dory for R/V Albatross III.  During the spring of 1954, the stern was cut off the dory to accommodate an outboard motor and the boat was electronically operated by remote control (no passengers!).  On 10/24/57 Joan the Drone was demotorized and reverted to a row boat.
